Launched in 1943 by designer Eleanor Lambert, NYFW is, along with London, Milan and Paris, a mainstay on the international fashion calendar. While many trade events allow industry professionals to register and attend at will, the collection of events that comprise New York Fashion Week are largely invitation-only, and each show is organized by individual designers and managed by their respective PR firms. Additionally, many off-calendar runway shows and after parties take place at undisclosed or far-flung venues throughout the five boroughs. The Council of Fashion Designers of America posts the official NYFW calendar online shortly before the shows. In 2014, the organization purchased the Fashion Calendar from founder Ruth Finley, who began publishing it in 1945. It is currently a subscription-based service, and fees start at $395 per year. Additional private shows during NYFW are run by Art Hearts Fashion, and take place at the Angel Orensanz in downtown New York.
